22nd Sunday in
Ordinary Time 29th
August 2010
Stewardship: In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to
give in to hope of repayment, but to give open-handed to the poor and needy.
That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful giving of God,
and Jesus assures us it is blessed indeed!
Good News: The greatness of humility
True humility is not false modesty — it means that we acknowledge
that all our talents come from God. Christ himself was humble even to
accepting death.
Each and every person in
the church has been blessed by God with talents. Each person has a different
set of talents, because no one person can supply everything that is needed.
But together sharing what God has given to each of us, we have more than
enough.
Sometime we hear people
say, I have no talent, I am not worthy to be part of that ministry! Saying
this is making two basic mistakes. Firstly to say I have no talent means that
we are saying God has not blessed us. Secondly if we think, that I am worthy,
then we will probably carry out the ministry through our own strength. Only
with God’s strength and with the gifts that God has given us, can we
take our part in the mission of the Church, which carrying on the mission of
Jesus.
Rather than looking at
ourselves as suppliers of God’s work, we should view ourselves as tools
in God’s hands. So we need to realise that
God can choose the task he has for us, and it may not be what we want to do.
St Bernadette of Lourdes fame, said she was nothing more than a broom hanging
behind the door, which God could take down to sweep the floor then return it
back to the back of the door.
Someone has to do the cleaning, someone has to do the simple tasks of folding
newsletters, and another handing them out to people entering church. Not
everyone is called to other ministries such as a Priest, or reader of the
word, or a Special Minister of the Eucharist, but that does not make the
ministry any less important.
If everyone was a musician,
there would be no singers. If everyone was an altar server, who would be in
the pews?
Here is St Francis
Xavier’s church, there are a great number of people serving in
different ministries, but the number is still small compared to the numbers
who come to Mass.
Who's
going to do it?
This
is the story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There
was a very important venture to start in a parish. Everybody was asked to do
it. Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it, Anybody could have done it,
in the end Nobody did it.
Everybody
got angry because Somebody should have done it, Nobody realised that
Everybody wouldn't do it because Nobody asked Anybody to do it.
Well I am asking everybody to consider doing something, even if it is
just promising to pray each day for the Parish. Anybody can do the work, but
they may need help or training, or have too wait a while. If nobody responds
then we are all the poorer for it.
Please ask yourself two
questions:
1. How much time do I give
to the church?
2. What do I do to help
others in the church?
If the answer to these questions is either very little or the bare
minimum, then do something about it. In the Last Judgement,
the amount we measure out will be the amount we receive.
Fr Roger is back so hopefully things will return to what
is sometimes called normal.

power. Who can tell me what it is>“ Tommy
blurted out,” I know, Aces”. The same Sunday School Teacher was
describing that when Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom she turned into a pillar of salt,
when Bobby interrupted. “My mum looked back once while she was driving
and she turned into a telephone pole.”
