21st Sunday in Ordinary Time 24 August 2008
Stewardship In today’s readings St Paul reminds the Romans - and
us—that all things come from God: ‘For from Him and through Him
and for Him all things are.” Good stewards understand that all is gift and share generously the
gifts of time, talent and treasure with which they’ve been blessed.
Good News: Simon Peter is a
headline or model of faith. A good model too, because he was moulded from no extraordinary clay. We do not stand back
at a fearful distance from Simon as someone of unattainable perfection. We
have seen his flesh and blood mixture being weak and strong, cold and hot,
fearful and courageous.
And now, into this vessel of
ordinary clay God pours an extraordinary gift … faith.
It is not your flesh and blood
mixture that gave you this light, but my Father in heaven, son of Jonah, you are the recipient of a great blessing.”
Faith is a blessing.
In the Gospel pages it is noticeable
that Jesus was amazed when he met with someone who believed: and he was moved
to bless the Father in thanksgiving for the faith of the little ones. Yet we
today have ceased to be amazed by faith: rather we are surprised and dismayed
when we come across someone who does not believe.
If you believe that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the saviour of
the world, then you are truly blessed. You are more than a creature of flesh
and blood. Like Simon, you deserve a new name.
Like Simon, you too are a new
Peter, a new rock in the temple
of God’s presence
upon earth. Your faith will be a rock of foundation to give you strong roots
to withstand the most severe storms and floods of life. Your faith will bring
you the keys to open and close the doors of life’s mysterious castle.
You have the key to open up God’s forgiveness and to lock away the
terrors of guilt. Your key will open up the light of wisdom, understanding
and knowledge: and lock out the powers of darkness.
You have the key to hope which will
sustain you. And the key to love, for if you believe in God’s love,
then you have the motive for overcoming every denial of love in your life:
your love will be greater than the hurts it receives.
In faith you have the key to
salvation.
If you have the gift of faith you are
truly blessed. You have a gift to be treasured with wonder and amazement: to
be carefully protected and daily nurtured by prayer and study.
You have a gift which
should move you to thank God and to praise him without ceasing.

Chaplain’s Course With the reduction of
the number of priests available to provide for the needs of people, more and
more lay people are being drawn into service in the community and
institutions. The South Country Deanery is investigating the possibility of a
Chaplain’s Course. It will consist of a 20 week (one evening each week)
or a full intensive week of study. At the end of the first set of twenty
sessions the members of the Course will know if this is how they can give
service to others. They can than study for a Certificate of Chaplaincy.
People
completing the Course will opt for one particular form of Chaplaincy such as
Hospital, Prison, Aged Care or Tertiary. Watch out for more information, or
contact Fr Roger if you are interested.
Teaching RE in State Schools I know that
a number of parishioners offer their services to State Schools to teach RE.
At the present time I have no idea how many parishioners are doing this. If
you are involved, please contact Fr Roger so that he can check that he has details

Silver Circle has commenced in the

can win some money and raise money for our Parish.

Humour: (From more Year 2
students). What’s
the difference between Mums and Dads? 1. Mums work at work and work at home
and dads just go to work at work. 2. Mums know how to talk to teachers
without scaring them. 3. Dads are taller and stronger, but mums have all the
real power ‘cause that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep
over at your friend’s. 4. Mums have magic,
they make you feel better without medicine. What would it take to make your mum
perfect? 1. On the
inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic
surgery. 2. Diet. You know, her hair, I’d diet, maybe blue. If you
could change one thing about your mum, what would it be? 1. She has
this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d GET rid of that.
2. I’d make my mum smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who
did it and not me. 3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes
on the back of her head.
